It was July 2018 when I realized I had done something seriously wrong to my hair. Within a six-month period, I had gone to full and luscious locks to dry, brittle, and seriously damaged locks. I can look back on that year and get a good sense of what had changed to get me to that point. I had just started a new relationship in July 2017, one year prior. It was the honeymoon phase of course, and all I wanted to do was do everything together ALL of the time. For me, that meant adapting to his lifestyle. The biggest change was my workout routine. My choice in workouts was 90% low intensity, and on the rare occasion where I did high intensity, it was usually on wash day.
We went on dates and ate out practically every night. Before we would go out, I joined him on his workout. They were always right after work. Much higher in intensity than I was used to. And afterward, I had an hour to get ready before we went out. How I cared for my hair within the time period between gym session to date night was where I went wrong.
Being single and on my own schedule I would usually let my hair air dry and go about my business and I didn’t heat style it every day, I was naturally cautious. But then I’m seeing this guy, I want to look my best for him. So I realized air drying wasn’t an option with only an hour to get ready. So I started using dry shampoo to absorb the sweat. At least I thought that’s what I was doing. You can read more about my thoughts on dry shampoo here. Over time, I had noticed how my hair felt super stiff, dry, and my scalp always felt agitated. I also notice a tremendous amount of shedding, on the bathroom floor and literally just sitting down – my hair was breaking off.
When I took the photo in July 2018, it was the shock I wasn’t ready for. People had kept saying to me, “Oh my gosh, did you cut your hair?” – and I would just say “Umm, no?”. I was blissfully in love and had not even noticed the magnitude of my hair loss. All the signs were there and ignored them.
So there are two brands that both have worked wonders for me. Wellbel Glamlab and Nuvana Bloom. Both have MSM, in addition to biotin, vitamins A,B,C,D,E, horsetail powder, and other filler ingredients. Both have made my hair longer, stronger, and much shinier, but I discovered Wellbel as I was taking Nuvana from an influencer I follow. There were two things that stood out to me immediately, the amount of MSM and there were fewer filler ingredients. Honestly, when you are taking any type of supplement you have to be careful. It can cause all kinds of side effects. I’m lucky and have never experienced anything other than hair growth or nothing at all, but I am conscious of what I’m putting in my body – so Wellbel had my interest. Wellbel is physician formulated and contains an additional 125mg of MSM. It also contains 3 other main ingredients that it attributes to the success of this scientifically backed product, which are HCL, Saw Palmetto, and Biotin. I had been using Nuvana for about 7 months, and with regular trims, grew about 3 inches in that time. I changed over to Wellbell in August 2021, and while it’s only been 5 months, the growth is still just as fast if not faster. My hair has never felt softer, felt fuller, been stronger, and my ends have never looked healthier. Since taking hair supplements that contain MSM, in the past year, and with frequent trims, I’ve experienced probably around 4-5 inches of hair growth in the past year. They also taste better than any supplement I’ve ever taken before in my life, so it’s a win-win.
Taking hair vitamins has certainly not been the only reason my hair is on fire these days. I have quite a few other products I swear by and now my hair is the best that has ever been. But having the inside matching the work I put on the outside has been a game changer. As with any kind of supplement you choose to ingest it is best to do your research and consult your doctor if you have concerns. I just wanted to share my experience with you because as someone who prefers to wear their hair in a heated style, it’s important to me that I protect my hair. Hair vitamins have been one of the single most important ways I’ve combatted heat damage and maintained growth.
