Lately, it seems the only time I actually enjoy shopping is when I’m searching for looks for an upcoming vacation. A place is the ultimate inspiration, it sets the perfect tone for building a mood board, except I’m actually buying what I’m collecting inspiration on — which is a much more exciting shopping experience. I get inspired by colors, the culture, and the setting in which I’m visiting. But I also stay true to my sense of style as well and try not to get sucked into all the trends. Yet at the same time, I do love a good Instagram #ootd moment. I’m a big fan of mixing high and low pieces. As a result, there are usually some key pieces I already know I want to invest in and then there are a few pieces I want that fit the theme but aren’t expensive. Because like when else will I be wearing these things. I’m also a big fan of items that travel well. I need items that roll up small and tight, that don’t wrinkle, and don’t take up a lot of space – all the while getting as many looks as I possibly can.

I always have my trusted retailers that I begin searching and I always have a color palette or certain styles in mind. This helps to narrow your search as well. I know that for a beach getaway it’s important to me that I’m comfortable, that my clothes travel well, that I can dress them up or down, and items that I can wear multiple ways. I can always count on Revolve, The Real Real, Showpo, and L*Space for my goodies. And – most importantly, I search online (less in person) because summer clothes are always on sale. And if the time you’re coveting is not on sale at the first place you look, google it and I guarantee you’ll find it on sale somewhere. I love shopping on The Real Real for trendy designer items I don’t want to pay full price for. I collect all of my finds on Pinterest and then start shopping.

We recently vacationed in Isla Holbox, Quintana Roo. I had a colorful laid back theme in mind – color was the main ingredient. Here are six of my must-haves that I made sure made it in my suitcase:

A Statement Bag

A statement bag is a necessity on a beach trip because you’re always carrying around things like sunscreen, flip flops, sunglasses, and maybe a hat — in a bag, so you may as well make it a good bag. Beach bags have really evolved in the last 5 years. I want my bag to match the theme of my looks. As of lately, I have noticed some incredible designers out there who design bags using locally sourced and natural materials and the craftsmanship is gorgeous! I look at handbags as an investment. I take care of them and I enjoy collecting them.

I was obsessing over this bag and ended up finding this one on sale at Coggles. And, I ended up being able to nest it in my larger Cult Gaia bag, so I took both of them with me. If you’re looking for a bag for your next getaway – here are a few favorites:

SUNNIES

When you’re fresh-faced, laying on the beach, or exploring the island sunglasses are your best friend. Next to shoes, they are the easiest way to elevate your look. Most importantly they are literally a requirement for a sunny day. I’ve been collecting eyewear since I was a teenager. Sunglasses are a whole vibe and some are literally dedicated to wearing them at the beach.

I’m obviously a fan of Cult Gaia. I had bought these for a prior trip to Mexico and these were definitely going with me again. Here are a few of my favorite finds:

HAT

I need to protect this skin but at the same time, I try to do the bare minimum with my hair when at the beach. Also, I’m in constant conflict with hats — they never look as good on me as they do on everyone else. I haven’t pinpointed the problem just yet but I keep on buying them only to never wear them. I KNOW, I KNOW – but, I did find a solution to the problem. Visors, yes the ones our beloved mothers rocked in the 80s. They always seemed so dated, but I’m telling you the minute the fashion industry jumped on board and said visors were “cool” — so did I. Now I can’t get enough of them. They don’t flatten your hair, your head doesn’t get hot and sweaty, you can wear them with sunglasses, and they fit any sized head. And the biggest plus – you know when you’re lying on the beach, either on a towel or lounge chair? You have to choose to either take your hat off or tilt it forward to the point where it’s on top of your face and you eventually can’t breathe. Well, visors – you don’t have to do anything. Lie down, go in the water, go about your business and forget it’s on your head.

I knew I wanted a had that evoked the colors of Mexico. So I was searching for multicolor straw hats (I love straw hats). This took me a while to find, but when I did find it – I managed to find this one on sale at Farfetch. Visors are the best and here are a couple of my favorites:

Hair Accessories

Ok so in addition to a visor, certain hair accessories are a necessity when you’re at the beach. They allow you to do the bare minimum with your hair, while adding a touch of style. Barrettes, scarves, clips, and headbands all make a difference. I have usually decided how I’m going to style my hair in advance and if I don’t have the accessories that fit my theme already, then I’ll search for a few to take with me.

I really love to wear “vintage” inspired silk scarves in my hair. Again, I had a vibrant color palette in mind and when I came across this Gucci scarf on The Real Real I needed to have it. Here are a few of the accessories I would pick:

cover ups

Not just any cover-up. I’m not a sarong kind of gal. I like to use actual clothes as a cover-up.  Like a button-up light-weight collared shirt, a romper/jumpsuit, or a silk slip dress.  I choose something that when I’m not wearing a swimsuit, I can wear as an outfit or part of an outfit. Not to mention something that is easy to take on and off. This helps me pack much less and most importantly it’s a purchase that goes beyond that of wearing it only on vacation.  Here are a couple of pieces I would choose:

You may have noticed that shoes were not part of my top 5. I’m going to attribute this to being a California native that grew up in a town where people traveled to the grocery store barefoot. Not that I ever did that, but I did walk around in flip-flops pretty much year-round. Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE a good shoe, but I don’t love sand in my shoe, so I just go with a Haviana’s flip flop, one or two pairs, and call it a day. Make sure to include your favorite swimmies and these 5 must-haves will set you up for the best beach getaway.
